Five people who recovered from Ebola have been discharged from treatment in Beni, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, as the country’s outbreak surpasses 6,000 reported cases.
The survivors, including a healthcare worker, were treated at Ebola centres run by Doctors Without Borders and Beni Hospital. They received certificates confirming their recovery and urged others with symptoms to seek medical care.
Their discharge came as health authorities reported that the Ebola outbreak has killed 2,911 people, while more than 1,360 patients have recovered.
The outbreak is spreading amid insecurity, population movements and displacement in eastern Congo, making it harder for health teams to trace contacts and contain infections.
The World Health Organization has warned that the outbreak could become larger than the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic in West Africa, which killed more than 11,000 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Despite the rising case count, health officials described the growing number of survivors as an encouraging sign in the response to the DR Congo Ebola outbreak.
