The council of Rusizi District has appointed a new mayor following the resignation of the previous mayor, Kibiriga.
The Advisory Council of Rusizi District in Rwanda’s Western Province has appointed Alfred Habimana as the interim mayor after the resignation of Anicet Kibiriga on November 23, 2023, due to personal reasons. Habimana previously served as vice-mayor for economic development since May. Kibiriga, who had been in office since November 2021, resigned alongside Anne Marie Dukuzumuremyi (vice-mayor for social affairs) and Jeanne d’Arc Niyonsaba (district council member and head of the National Women’s Council).
Monique Uwimana has stepped in as acting vice-mayor following Dukuzumuremyi’s resignation. The council held an extraordinary meeting to accept these resignations, which were described as unrelated to any issues within the district. Odette Uwizeye, the advisory council chairperson, confirmed that service delivery continues smoothly.
Additionally, changes were made at the provincial level, as President Paul Kagame appointed Jean-Bosco Ntibitura as the new governor of Western Province, replacing Lambert Dushimimana. This follows a wave of resignations in nearby Karongi District, where mayor Valentine Mukase and vice mayor Théophile Niragire also stepped down the previous week.
