Editorial Standards & Ethics

The principles that guide our journalism

Biheruka kuvugururwa: January 15, 2023

African Updates is committed to independent, accurate, and fair journalism. These editorial standards set out the principles that guide our reporting and the values our readers can hold us to.

Accuracy

Accuracy is our first obligation. We work to ensure that every fact we publish is correct, verified against reliable sources, and presented in proper context. When we are unsure, we say so. When we make a mistake, we correct it openly, as described in our Corrections Policy.

Independence

Our editorial decisions are made independently. Our reporting is not for sale, and coverage is never influenced by advertisers, political interests, or outside pressure. We report in the public interest, and we distinguish clearly between news reporting and opinion or commentary.

Fairness and Balance

We strive to be fair to all sides of a story. Where a report involves competing viewpoints or accusations against individuals or organisations, we seek to represent relevant perspectives and give those criticised a genuine opportunity to respond. We aim for balance without false equivalence, and we treat every subject of our reporting with respect.

Sourcing and Verification

We base our reporting on credible, verifiable sources. Wherever possible, we attribute information clearly so readers can judge it for themselves. We corroborate important claims with more than one source when we can, and we are cautious with unverified information, rumours, and material circulating on social media. We do not publish claims we cannot stand behind.

We protect the confidentiality of sources who share information with us in confidence and who may face risk for doing so.

Transparency

We believe readers deserve to know who is reporting the news. Our articles carry bylines identifying their authors, and our authors have profile pages describing their background. We are transparent about corrections, and we disclose relevant context that helps readers understand our reporting.

Originality and Attribution

We value original reporting — our own interviews, observation, and analysis. When we draw on the work of others, we credit them. We do not plagiarise, and we do not present others’ work as our own.

Independence from Conflicts of Interest

Our journalists avoid conflicts of interest that could compromise, or appear to compromise, the integrity of our reporting. Where a potential conflict is unavoidable, we disclose it.

Use of Artificial Intelligence

Editorial judgement at African Updates rests with our human editors and journalists. Where digital tools, including artificial intelligence, are used to assist with tasks such as research, drafting, or translation, the resulting content is reviewed and verified by our editorial team before publication. We take responsibility for everything we publish, regardless of the tools used to produce it.

Respect and Dignity

We report on people and communities with fairness and dignity. We are mindful of the impact our reporting can have, particularly on vulnerable individuals, and we avoid gratuitous harm, sensationalism, and discrimination.

Accountability

We hold ourselves accountable to these standards and to our readers. If you believe we have fallen short — through an error, an omission, or a lapse in fairness — we want to hear from you. Contact us at info@africanupdates.com or through our Contact page.

These standards work together with our Corrections Policy and Privacy Policy to reflect our commitment to responsible, trustworthy journalism.
